Andrew Braddock:

Andrew Braddock was Head of Access & Mobility at Transport for London [TfL] until August 2002, having been responsible for London Transport’s Unit for Disabled Passengers since January 1991.  He has subsequently been seconded to Transdev Plc as Project Manager for the South Hampshire tram scheme and has worked on bus design and infrastructure development issues for TfL’s Surface Transport Directorate.

Prior to 1991 Andrew Braddock was Director & General Manager of “The Bee Line” – a bus company operating throughout Berkshire and into the adjoining counties.  He was involved in road passenger transport operation from 1968, holding a variety of management appointments with the Bristol, London Country and Alder Valley bus companies.  His early career was in the surveying profession as a trainee with British Rail and then with London Transport between 1965 and 1968.

After joining the Bristol Omnibus Company just prior to the formation, on 1 January 1969, of NBC (the state-owned National Bus Company), Andrew Braddock spent a period as Assistant Divisional Traffic Superintendent in Bristol and then as Personal Assistant to NBC’s South Wales and West Regional Chairman.  In 1973 he was appointed District Superintendent in charge of the Bristol Company’s Swindon operations.

From 1976 to 1979 he was Area Manager (South) at London Country Bus Services and then Operations Manager for that Company before joining Alder Valley as Traffic Manager in 1984.

In the run-up to privatisation of all the NBC subsidiary companies, he was appointed Assistant Manager of Alder Valley North in 1986, which became “The Bee Line” a year later.

For many years he has actively promoted access improvements to public transport to benefit older and disabled people, and was responsible for developing a number of initiatives to meet the needs of mobility-impaired Londoners.

Andrew Braddock takes a keen interest in the public transport policies of other countries and has travelled extensively both professionally and personally, describing himself as a European first and an Englishman second!  He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport and the holder of a Certificate of Professional Competence in National and International Operations, issued by the UK Department of Transport.  He also serves as Vice-Chairman of the governing body of the UK Bus Driver of the Year Competition.

From October 2003, following early retirement at age 55 from Transport for London, Andrew Braddock is establishing himself as an independent transport consultant under the name A B O U T (standing for Andrew Braddock On Urban Transport, and for About – Bus – Overground – Underground – Tram).
